The closest to
Europe located tropical sea got its name from the occasionally increase of the
alga Oscillatoria Erythraeum which paints the waters red.
The Red Sea stretches north from the golf of Suez up to the strait Bab el
Mandeb, the "gate of the tears" in the south. It has a middle breadth of 280
kilometers on a length of approx. 2600 kilometers. The average depth of the sea
amounts to 900 meters. The biggest depth achieves it with over 2700 meters in
front of Port Sudan.
The water temperature is in winter 21 - 24'C and increases in summer up to 29 '
C.
